The New Batman is… Who?!

Ever since it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Batman would be appearing in the sequel to Man of Steel, there has been speculation about who would play the newest version of the Dark Knight. And last Thursday evening, the world got its answer.

Ben Affleck.

And the internet exploded.

My first instinct was to run and hide. It’s not been a secret that I’m not particularly excited about the Superman/Batman (Batman/Superman? Worlds Finest?) movie, for reasons that I won’t go into here. But the absolute hatred astonished me.

The amusing tweets and comments were fine, I expect no less from the internet.

It was the hatred that was hard to take.

Maybe Ben Affleck isn’t the best choice for Batman, but the loudest complaints are also among the most ridiculous. Sure, he has an accent, but Batman is a comic book character; we don’t actually know what he sounds like. He’s had some questionable movie choices, Gigli and Daredevil to name a couple, but there have also been some amazing ones (Argo, The Town, etc). And he may not look like what people envision as Batman, but as a fictional character, looks have some flexibility.

Think back on what the response to Heath Ledger as the Joker was. That turned out to be a brilliant interpretation.  How about Anne Hathaway as Catwoman? Or Hugh Jackman as Wolverine? People can surprise you.

So don’t assume that Ben Affleck is going to suck as Batman. We haven’t seen him in the part yet. And no, he wasn’t my first choice, but you know what? I think he’ll be just fine.

My major issue is that I feel that there are types of roles where Ben Affleck excels, and types where he doesn’t, and that superheroes fall into the latter category. That said, before reading this, I had only seen the funny comments; I (fortunately!) hadn’t seen any of the just plain rude ones. I think the casting choice was a poor one, yes, but not, like, the worst one ever. Kudos to you for calmly pointing that out, and for being willing to give Affleck!Batman a chance.

(Also…he has an accent? So what? How do we know that the Gotham accent isn’t similar to a Boston one?
Unless someone’s been doing linguistic studies there…which I’m not saying no geeks have!)
