Iron Man 3. Star Wars Day. Free Comic Book Day.
Yep, it’s geek weekend alright.
And here are some plans and ideas.
Iron Man 3
If you haven’t seen it yet, you probably will be soon. Spoilers are wandering their way into the world, and I, for one, don’t want to know anything in advance. It’s incredibly rare for me to see movies in the theatre at all, and even rarer for that to happen on opening weekend. But Sunday morning, at the movie theatre I shall be, to immerse myself in the continuing adventures of Tony Stark.
Star Wars Day
Just in case you have no idea what I’m talking about, Star Wars Day is May the 4th. As in, “May the force by with you.” Possibly the best part of the day are the blank looks you get from people who just don’t get it. Or maybe the smiles of recognition from the people that do.
Free Comic Book Day
The first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day. And no, that doesn’t mean all comics are free, as nice a thought as that is. Certain comics are printed specifically for the event, and participating comic shops give them away. It’s a way of introducing new readers to comics, readers to new comics, celebrating the medium, and thanking readers for their support.
Some comic shops have sales, some have guests (writers, artists, etc), some encourage costumes; there are an unlimited number of ways that people celebrate.
So when you go to your local comic shop, or whatever comic shop you choose to visit on Free Comic Book Day, try to buy something from them. Free comics are great, but support the store as well, make sure they know how much you appreciate them.
And whatever you do on this weekend of geek, have fun!
